Some Medications can cause Clenching and Grinding

It is worthwhile checking your medications you may be taking.

Some medications have clenching, grinding and tightness in the jaw and cheek as a side effect.

Common medications are called SSRIs, short for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

These drugs are commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

These drugs can not only cause clenching and grinding but also headaches, dizziness and gastrointestinal difficulties.

There are many drugs in this category such as Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro and Paxil to name a few.

The agents fluoxetine and paroxitine are indicated to cause grinding at night.

If this see rings a bell, please talk to your prescribing doctor to see if there are alternative options to the current medication.

Happy Rehab!
